Post-Debate Poll Reveals Surprising Shift in Trump-Biden Battle
ATLANTA — Despite calls from some Democratic voters for President Joe Biden to step aside following a lackluster debate performance, a new Morning Consult poll shows an unexpected twist: Biden’s support has actually improved.
During the debate hosted by CNN in Atlanta on June 27, 2024, Biden and former President Donald Trump faced off, with Biden gaining a point in the latest survey. The poll reveals that when respondents were asked to choose between Biden and Trump, 45% favored Biden while 44% chose Trump.
Chris Hayes, MSNBC host, expressed his surprise on Twitter, saying: “shrug emoji no one knows anything …”
The results are reminiscent of a poll conducted after Trump’s criminal conviction on 34 felony counts, which also showed no significant shift in Biden’s support.
According to Morning Consult pollsters, “President Joe Biden has lost no immediate ground to Trump.” However, 57% of those who watched the debate believed Trump outperformed Biden. This sentiment included 19% of Democrats, 60% of Independents, and 93% of Republicans.
In a Friday appearance, Biden acknowledged his subpar debate performance but reaffirmed his commitment to the race, despite calls from major publications like The New York Times and The Star-Ledger for him to step aside.
“I don’t walk as easy as I used to, I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to, I don’t debate as well as I used to, but I know what I do know. I know how to tell the truth,” Biden stated. “I would not be running again if I did not believe with all my heart and soul that I can do this job.”
Biden added, “Folks, I give you my word. As a Biden, I would not be running again if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul I can do this job. Because quite frankly, the stakes are too high. Donald Trump is a genuine threat to this nation.”
First Lady Jill Biden offered unwavering support: “There is no one that I would rather have sitting in the Oval Office right now than my husband,” she affirmed.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, often mentioned as a potential replacement for Biden, also voiced his support: “I would never turn my back on President Biden. Never turn my back on President Biden. I don’t know a Democrat in my party that would do so. And especially after tonight, we have his back,” Newsom declared.
“We’re running not just a 90-yard dash. We are all in. We’re going to double down in the next few months. We’re going to win this election.
